Well they took pity on us I guess. After a full night sleep, I got the call at 7am yesterday morning and off I went to P16 to look for a lost female hiker (just a reminder this was an exercise, no one was actually lost!). It was a really good learning experience and I now feel fully confident I'm ready for a real search.
Highlights of the day:
- Tromping through the woods for over 8 hours. This was great because I don't hike as much as I'd like to.
-Playing with a fancy GPS. So freaking cool. I would love to have one.
- Being the radio person for my team. I was the one who was talking to Command about our position, our task and describing different clues we found. I thought I'd be nervous and screw up but I actually *loved* being on the radio! I got to say things like "Copy that" and "Over and out". Super fun.
- Really amazing people to work with. Even though there were a bunch of us new searchers, we were welcomed with open arms and no one acted like they were better than us.
Tonight is my ball hockey playoff finals and then its once again back to riding my bike.
SMH is in great condition, the loop is apparently open and Chelsea is now looking good to go! So. many. choices. I don't know where to ride this week. Not a bad problem to have.

What's your 20?? =P
Glad it was a success!! =)
I still find this hard to believe... How long have you been riding in SMH? Can you find your own way around there yet? ;p
Glad to hear you enjoyed the training; it sounds really interesting!
Lenny After 7 years or so, I'm finally competent finding my way in SMH and I don't get lost in there anymore. Slow learner or what!!
The key for me was seeing a map. I always need the big picture or else I'm useless finding my way in the woods.
if yah think GPS is cool stuff... yah gotta play with some of the stuff I get to play with
FLIR technology
RADAR for people tracking
microphone array for people tracking...
there is a whole slew of really really cool technology out there.
Including UAVs with FLIRS on them now for chasing, finding people...
What would take days to do on foot, can take seconds to do with technology.
Technology has its ups and downs.
The search capability of technology is the up that technology provides...
